Who this covers
Decawise is a technology and data consulting practice based in Edmonton, Alberta. It is a registered trade name of Daniel Kurian, who operates it as a sole proprietor. In this policy, “I” and “me” mean Decawise, and “you” means anyone who visits decawise.ca, contacts me, books a call, or works with me as a client.
I am responsible for the personal information described here, and I am the person to contact about it. I handle it in line with Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and, where it applies, the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
What I collect
Information reaches me in a handful of specific ways. Each one is listed below with what is involved, why I need it, and where it ends up.
The contact form
- What
- Your name, email address, company (optional), the service you pick, and your message.
- Why
- To read your enquiry and reply to it.
- Where
- Stored by Netlify, which hosts this site, and forwarded to my business email.
Booking a call
- What
- Your name, email address, the time you choose, and any notes you add.
- Why
- To schedule the call and send you a calendar invitation.
- Where
- Cal.com, the scheduling service behind the “Book a free call” buttons, and my calendar.
Email and calls
- What
- Whatever you choose to tell me, including anything you share about your business during a consultation.
- Why
- To understand your situation, answer your questions, and prepare a proposal if you ask for one.
- Where
- My Google Workspace email account and my own notes.
Site analytics
- What
- Pages viewed, how you arrived, approximate location (city level), and device and browser type.
- Why
- To see which pages are useful and which ones are not, so I can improve the site.
- Where
- Google Analytics. I see aggregate reports, not a profile of you by name.
Technical data
- What
- Your IP address and basic request details, such as the page requested and the time.
- Why
- Every website needs this to deliver pages and to block abuse.
- Where
- Processed by Netlify as part of hosting the site.
One more thing: if you switch between light and dark mode, the site remembers your choice in your own browser. That setting never leaves your device and I cannot see it.
Data from client projects
If you hire me, the work often involves your business data: spreadsheets, databases, reports, or exports from the tools you use. That data can include personal information about your customers, staff, or suppliers.
When that happens:
- I use it only to do the work we agreed on, and I act on your instructions.
- I ask for the minimum access the project needs, and I prefer read-only access where that is enough.
- I do not share it with anyone else unless our agreement or the law requires it.
- When the project ends, I return or delete it as set out in our agreement.
You remain responsible for having the right to share that information with me, for example by having your own privacy policy in place for your customers. If our written agreement covers data handling in more detail, the agreement takes priority over this section.
What I will not do
I do not sell, rent, or trade personal information. I do not use it for advertising or retargeting, and I will not add you to a mailing list without asking first.
I also will not put a client's business data into a third-party AI tool unless that client has agreed to it. When AI tools are part of a project, we decide together which ones are acceptable and what data they may see.
Services I rely on
I use a small set of established providers to run this site and my business. Each one handles information only to provide its service to me.
- Netlify: website hosting and contact form submissions.
- Google: business email (Google Workspace) and site analytics (Google Analytics).
- Cal.com: scheduling for booked calls.
These providers are based in the United States, so information you send through this site may be stored or processed outside Canada. While it is there, it is subject to the laws of that country, and authorities there may be able to access it. If you would like more detail about how these providers handle personal information, email me and I will tell you what I know or point you to their policies.
The site also links to LinkedIn and to client websites. Those sites have their own privacy policies, and this one does not cover them.
Cookies and analytics
Google Analytics uses first-party cookies (named _ga and
_ga_ followed by an ID) to tell one visit from another. They
last up to two years unless you clear them. Cal.com may set its own cookies
when the booking window opens. The site does not use advertising cookies.
You can limit or block analytics at any time:
- Block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site works normally without them.
- Install Google's Analytics opt-out add-on.
- Use a browser or extension that blocks trackers. I will not try to work around it.
How long I keep it
- Enquiries that do not become projects: up to two years, so I have context if you get back in touch, then deleted.
- Client records: contracts, invoices, and related correspondence are kept for as long as Canadian tax law requires, currently six years.
- Client project data: returned or deleted at the end of the project, as set out in our agreement.
- Analytics: Google Analytics keeps visit-level data for no longer than 14 months. After that, only aggregated totals remain, such as monthly page views, which cannot identify you.
You can ask me to delete your information sooner. See your rights below.
Keeping it safe
The site is served over HTTPS. The accounts that hold your information are protected with strong passwords, and I am the only person with access to them. Client data stays in the systems we agree on and on the computers I use for my work, and I remove any local copies when the project ends.
No system is perfectly secure. If a breach ever puts your personal information at real risk of significant harm, I will tell you and the relevant privacy commissioner as the law requires.
Your rights
You can ask me to:
- tell you what personal information I hold about you and how I have used it,
- correct anything that is wrong or out of date,
- delete your information, unless I am legally required to keep it, and
- stop using it for a purpose you previously agreed to.
Email daniel@decawise.ca with your request. I will reply within 30 days, and there is no charge. I may ask you to confirm your identity first, so that I only release information to the person it belongs to.
If you are not satisfied with my answer, you can contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Children
This site is written for business owners and their teams. It is not aimed at anyone under 18, and I do not knowingly collect information from children. If you think a child has sent me information, let me know and I will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If the way I handle information changes, for example because I start using a new tool, I will update this page and the date at the top. If a change affects information I already hold about you, I will tell you directly before it takes effect.
